Long-delayed Rite Aid plans begin with demolition of Jonestown Road office building

Contractors began work this week on a long-delayed Rite Aid plan in Lower Paxton Township.

G&R Excavating and Demolition, Inc. of Tyrone, Pa., is tearing down the office building and ripping up the parking lot at 4999 Jonestown Road.

According to Dauphin County tax records, Rite Aid purchased the 1.8-acre tract at Jonestown and Devonshire roads for $3.1 million in January 2006.

Land development plans were approved by township supervisors around the same time, said Township Manager George Wolfe. Various businesses, including a bank and a dentist, filled the office space in the years since.

A Rite Aid spokeswoman said the store is slated to open in January 2015 and will feature the drugstore chain's new wellness concept. The store will feature Rite Aid’s wellness format, featuring “wellness ambassadors” that serve as a bridge between the front end of the store and the pharmacy.

Further details on the new store will be released in the coming months, said Kristin Kellum, PR specialist for Rite Aid.

According to online bid documents, the general contractor on the project is York County based eciConstruction LLC

East Pennsboro Township-based Rite Aid Corp. is the No. 3 drugstore chain in the nation. The company was operating 4,574 stores as of June 28 — a drop from 4,612 stores a year ago.
