Hampden Township approves plans for a Sikh Society temple

By

The Hampden Township commissioners approved plans last week for the Sikh Society of Harrisburg to build a worship center at 1800 Good Hope Road.

The organization is in the midst of fundraising towards a $300,000 goal, which will pay for the property and construction, the Sikh Society said on its website. The group reports it has $158,000 in donations as of June 25.

The commissioners granted preliminary and final land development approval for the plans on 2 acres, pending receipt of a highway occupancy permit from PennDOT. The tract is in the township office-park zoning district.

Plans by Dawood Engineering call for a 5,000-square-foot building.

According to its Facebook page, the Sikh Society of Harrisburg was incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in early 2008 by the Sikh/Punjabi community with the sole goal of building a worship center.
