Got an idea on improving fracking environmental, health and safety issues?

By ,

Entrepreneurs and inventors with a product aimed at improving environmental, health and safety issues associated with fracking: Take heed.

The Shale Gas Innovation and Commercialization Center, run by Ben Franklin Technology Partners, is holding its second annual Environmental, Health and Safety Award Competition.

“It is paramount to the success of the shale gas industry that they operate in an environmentally responsible, safe manner, which gains the trust and respect of the commonwealth’s citizens, as well as the workers they employ and the communities in which they operate,” said center Executive Director Bill Hall.

The award’s goal is “to place a spotlight on the importance of (environmental, health and safety) to the shale gas industry by highlighting the new technologies that are being developed every year to promote continuous improvement in this area,” according to the center’s website.

Applications, found here, are being accepted until Aug. 1. The winner will be notified Aug. 15 and be recognized at the Sept. 23 Shale Insight 2014 Technology Showcase, which, if you are really serious about improving environmental, health and safety issues, you probably already have on your radar.

If you don’t, at the showcase “suppliers of emerging technologies in the shale gas industry will present their innovations to the natural gas community,” according to a news release from the center. For more on that, click here.

The showcase, and the 2014 preconference workshop and conference during which it is held, is run by the Marcellus Shale Coalition, the group that has long advocated for natural-gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale region.

Last year, 12 emerging technologies representatives were on display. Last year’s winner was HalenHardy LLC of Bellwood, Pa. The company, founded in 2013, makes products “designed to protect workers from exposure to dangerous dusts, limit access to dangerous areas and reduce the number of slip, trip and fall accidents in the workplace,” according to

Now, the physical prize is a crystal trophy, but the exposure during the showcase could be the big break some small startup needs.

Do you have an idea?
