State of the Unions: How Pa. compares

Pennsylvania ranks fourth nationally for union membership with about 700,000 people in 2013, the most recent year available. California ranked first, with about 2.4 million. New York was second with 2 million and Illinois was third with about 900,000.

The state with the lowest union membership was North Carolina, which had about 116,000.
