The Harrisburg News Co. is merging with New Jersey-based Hudson News Distributors LLC, effective June 30, according to a letter sent late last week to suppliers of the Lower Paxton Township-based wholesale distributor.

Hudson is one of the largest book and magazine distributors in the country.

“The magazine distribution industry has faced unprecedented challenges over the past several years making it more difficult for companies like Hudson and Harrisburg News to operate profitable,” the letter from President and CEO Steven Etter said. “The combination of our two companies will create significant enhanced economies of scale while still being able to provide our industry best superior service to our customers.”

Harrisburg News Co., which recently consolidated its Lebanon operations, has been run by the Etter family since 1913, according to its website. That’s when Samuel Etter opened his first newspaper stand in Palmyra.

The business was known as the Lebanon Valley News Co. until the mid-1970s. It then acquired the larger Harrisburg News Agency and later merged the organizations.

Today, Harrisburg News Co. distributes magazines, books and newspapers throughout Central Pennsylvania and parts of Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Virginia, according to its website.

Etter said he will continue as president and CEO of the Harrisburg News division of Hudson News. He also will serve as Hudson’s vice chairman, according to the letter.

A Hudson representative was not immediately available to discuss the deal. Terms were not disclosed.

The merger will reportedly provide distribution and merchandising services to over 16,000 customers throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, according to a post on MagazinePublisher.com.
