Parts manufactured in York County will be used in a hydroelectric project on the Ohio River.

Voith Hydro, which is headquartered in West Manchester Township, is providing three stators and three distributors to American Municipal Power’s Smithland Hydroelectric Project in Kentucky, according to a news release from the company.

While the parts were assembled and are being shipped to the hydroelectric project from Voith’s Hannibal, Ohio, plant, the distributors were manufactured at the York County facility, according to the release.

Distributors are major components of generators that will be used to provide power, Voith said. The stator is a key component of the generator and typically one of the larger components of the power unit of a hydroelectric project, according to the release. The stators for Smithland are more than 30 feet in diameter and weigh almost 182 tons.

Smithland is the fourth of four hydroelectric projects Voith has worked on for American Municipal Power on the Ohio River. It had also shipped stators and distributors to the Cannelton and Meldahl projects in Kentucky and Willow Island in West Virginia.

American Municipal Power’s hydroelectric projects — done on existing locks and dams on the river — will add more than 300 megawatts of new, renewable generation. The Smithland project will provide 72 MW of power once operational, the Voith said.

“Taken together, AMP’s Ohio River projects represent the largest new U.S. hydro development undertaken in recent years,” the release states.

Founded in 1867, Voith Group employs more than 43,000 people, generates $7.7 billion in sales, operates in about 50 countries around the world and is one of the biggest family-owned companies in Europe, according to the release. Voith Hydro is a group division of Voith and, with a workforce of more than 5,300 employees and a sales volume of more than $1.7 billion, supplies hydropower plant equipment.
