Trucking firms thrive in Carlisle area

The Carlisle/Middlesex Township area has long been home to many of the leading national trucking companies.

According to the state Center for Workforce Information and Analysis and the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, the trucking industry in Cumberland County employs 5,830 (90 companies reporting).

Many of those companies have changed hands through the years because of the ups and downs of the industry. For example, Glen Moore Transport operated a fleet out of its Carlisle facility until 2005, when YRC Worldwide purchased the company and renamed it YRC Glen Moore. Celadon Trucking Services purchased the company from a struggling YRC in 2011.

Despite the vagaries of the industry, the Carlisle/Middlesex area remains popular for trucking terminals because of its proximity to Interstate 81 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, as well as nearby Interstate 83.
