A Milton Hershey School alumnus now serves as its president after the school's board appointed Peter G. Gurt as the school's 10th president Thursday.

Gurt succeeds Anthony J. Colistra, who retired in July 2103. John Estey, who was interim president for the 2013-14 school year, will return to his role as executive vice president of administration for the Hershey Trust Co., according to a school news release.

Gurt is being promoted from senior vice president and chief operating officer, a position the 46-year-old had held since 2009.

In his former position, he was responsible for admissions and family relations, curriculum and instruction, the office of alumni relations and other areas. Previously he had been vice president of administration and vice president of student life.

A Palmyra resident, Gurt started at the school when he was 5 years old and attended Temple University after graduation. He received a bachelor's degree in business administration, then a master's in education from Penn State University.

Between school and his career, Gurt has spent about 33 years at the school.

“I have spent virtually my entire career serving with the very dedicated staff at Milton Hershey School,” he said. “Together we have ensured that our students are provided the best opportunities for success in life.”

The school, in Derry Township and started by Hershey Co. founder Milton Hershey, provides cost-free education in a private-school format for children of low-income families.
