A new partnership between Highmark Inc. and DaVita will initially target patients in Western and Central Pennsylvania.
Pittsburgh-based insurer Highmark has a significant presence in the midstate, and DaVita, a provider of kidney care services across the U.S. and internationally, is a division of DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc.
Highmark hopes to slow rising health care costs for members with end-stage renal disease by improving the quality of medical care and delivering better clinical outcomes, according to a news release.
"We want to work with providers to pay for value," Robert Wanovich, Highmark vice president of market strategy and delivery, said in the release. "This new, shared-savings program is a good example of a collaboration where both companies can benefit and, ultimately, deliver better care to the member."
"Someone facing end-stage renal disease usually gets treatment several times per week," he added. "There is a lot of opportunity for patient education and improved coordination of care."
It is estimated DaVita will reach about 500 Highmark members with ESRD through the partnership.
