Perry County lands $2.8M infrastructure grant

By

Howe Township Municipal Authority in Perry County has been awarded a PennWorks grant of more than $2.8 million that officials say will support the creation of 250 jobs.

“The grant is going toward improvements to the wastewater treatment system that will allow new commercial and retail development to take place, including a medical center which will be of great benefit to local residents,” state Rep. Mark Keller, R-86, said in a news release.

The 30,000-square-foot medical center will be developed by Newport Medical One LLC and is projected to create 50 jobs.

The other project planned for the growth area along State Route 34 is 250,000 square feet of commercial and retail space developed by HAMM Equities LLC that is projected to attract 200 jobs.

“A lack of infrastructure in this area has been an impediment to growth in this area,” said Perry County Commissioner Brenda Benner. “It is exciting to know that jobs will be created and much needed medical services will be added for the residents of Perry County and surrounding areas.”

The grant will be used for Phase I design and building of wastewater infrastructure improvements consisting of gravity, low-pressure and pressure sewers and three pump stations for connection to the Newport Borough Municipal Authority’s Wastewater Treatment Plant in Howe Township.

Administered by the Commonwealth Financing Authority, PennWorks provides grants and loans for projects that construct, expand or improve water and wastewater infrastructure and are directly related to an economic development project.
