After several years of planning, Checkers Bistro has moved to the Champion Forge group of shops at 398 Harrisburg Ave. in Lancaster.

Checkers opened in 2006 in a space a few blocks south of the new location and began talks with Champion Forge in November 2011, according to a news release. The new space is more than 50 percent larger than the restaurant’s original location and includes a bar, larger dining area and a private room for larger parties and business events.

Alison McIndoe of A.K. Interiors in Lancaster designed the new space and was the general contractor overseeing the work.

“After over seven years in our original space, we were looking to upgrade our dining experience and increase our service capacity,” said David Payne. His co-proprietors at Checkers are Masami Kawano, who founded the restaurant with him, and Jeff Thornton, who joined them this past summer.

Checkers’ hours are 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; 4:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; and 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday. It will soon resume hosting host Happy Hour from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and on Sundays, and it also offers a to-go menu and full off-site catering services. Reservations are encouraged.
