The recent Great American Outdoor Show in Harrisburg had a $70 million economic impact on Dauphin County, officials with the Hershey Harrisburg Regional Visitors Bureau and the National Rifle Association of America confirmed today.
The official estimate, which was delivered to the county commissioners, is in line with preliminary numbers reported last week.
Officials said direct spending by attendees and visitors was about $35 million. That estimate is based on a single room for each vendor for 10 nights and 10 percent of estimated attendees staying one night.
Each room night is multiplied by an average spend of $300 per day and each day visitor is multiplied by $180 per day.
Estimated attendance was based on known parking results in and around the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center. It does not account for auxiliary lots at malls, nearby colleges and other private parking.
The total used was 171,136 people, an increase from 2012’s estimate of 140,000. The bureau uses a parking multiplier of four people per car, said Rick Dunlap, a bureau spokesman.
The 2013 show was canceled.
Direct spending is doubled to include the indirect spending and overall economic impact, according to the bureau.
Other show notes:
• Lodging: More than 10,000 more room nights were sold this year (46,873) compared with 2012 (36,840), according to the bureau. Without a show last year, there were 28,293 room nights sold during the same nine-day period. The bureau said 33 of the 81 hotels in its coverage area were involved in a room block program for the show this year. Last year, 22 of 78 hotels were included in the program before the show was canceled.
• Harrisburg: The city is projected to receive about $200,000 in amusement tax revenue from the outdoor show, according to the bureau.
• NRA: The NRA sold nearly 4,800 memberships on location, which included free admission to the show. Adult tickets were $12 this year.
