Four midstate-based financial institutions noticed in social media ranks

By ,

I'm a sucker for lists.

I'm That Guy who surfs the TV channels at 3 a.m. and stops on Fuse to see what video is currently playing in the "Top 40 Awful '90s Videos" list and gets sucked in until sun-up just so I could say, "See, see! I told you Rico Suave would be No. 1!"

So when I saw a couple of recent national and worldwide lists featuring some locally present midstate financial institutions, I couldn't resist.

The one most people in the financial world likely care most about is SNL Financial's annual list of the 100 biggest banks in the world, where Wells Fargo & Co. and its $1.5 trillion in assets placed 21st (fourth-biggest in the United States) and PNC Financial Services Group Inc. ranked 82nd in the world with its $309 billion in assets.

No other banks with heavy midstate presence made the list. Bank of America, which ranks at No. 12 as the second-biggest American bank, does have two Lancaster County locations, but that's it.

But in what looks like an exhaustive process to rank all the banks and credit unions of the English-speaking world in a number of categories, The Financial Brand's Power 100 Social Media Database ranks the best social-media-savvy financial institutions.

Four midstate-based financial institutions got mentioned in top 100 social media categories — Susquehanna Bank, the Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union, AmeriChoice Federal Credit Union and Members 1st Federal Credit Union.

Banks and credit unions had separate lists, and all statistics were based on 2013 fourth-quarter numbers.

Both PSECU and AmeriChoice hit the top 100 for Twitter followers; PSECU ranked 80th in Power 100 for overall social media presence; and Members 1st took home the local honors for the most Facebook likes in the credit union category, ranking 96th. PSECU's YouTube channel ranked as the 69th-most-watched.

For banks based in English-speaking counties, Susquehanna Bank of Lititz checks in at No. 98 on the list of most Twitter followers, with 1,974.

Other banks based outside the midstate but with heavy local presence on the Twitter follower list include Wells Fargo (ranked No. 7 with 69,268 followers); PNC Bank (43rd, 9,738 followers); RBS Citizens (49th, 8,608 followers); and M&T Bank (83rd, 3,566 followers).

When it came to Faceook "likes" for banks, Wells Fargo (11th), PNC (23rd), M&T (50th), RBS Citizens (54th) and Susquehanna (95th) were all repeats, and Santander Bank founds its way into the list at 78th. All five also ranked on the overall Power 100 Social Media Rankings for Banks list.

Wells Fargo had the most-watched YouTube channel, PNC ranked eighth and Susquehanna ranked 78th.

Editor's note: This item was modified from its previous version to correct the name of Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union.
