Ahold meat-packaging facility up and running
Ahold USA, the Cumberland County-based parent of Giant Food Stores, is ramping up operations at its new meat-packaging facility in Lower Allen Township.
The 162,000-square-foot facility at 2628 Lisburn Road opened in the fall and is up to 450 employees, company spokeswoman Tracy Pawelski said. It is operated by Kansas-based Vantage Foods US and prepares and packages beef and pork products for sale in Ahold's Pennsylvania and Maryland Giant stores.
The facility is fully equipped and "is on track to exceed 800 (employees) when the facility is at full capacity this spring," Pawelski said in an email.
"Vantage is receiving orders from stores, cutting and wrapping product in retail-ready packaging, assembling the orders, and transporting approximately nine to 14 loads of product to divisional warehouses for fresh delivery to stores every day," Ahold said in a statement.
Vantage continues to add employees across the board, the company added, including production employees, experienced meat cutters, machine operators and maintenance mechanics.
As part of its deal with the state to build the facility, Ahold received $1.275 million in PA First Grants, and Vantage Foods received $360,000 in job training assistance, according to the governor's office.
The facility was built to LEED certification standards "in order to utilize the most advanced global food processing technology to ensure safe, premium-quality production and distribution," Ahold said in the statement.
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and is an internationally recognized mark of excellence for building green buildings.
