York County company Adhesives Research to lay off 36 in downsizing

York County development and manufacturing company Adhesives Research announced Thursday it will lay off 36 employees.

The layoffs of both salaried and hourly employees at the company's Springfield Township facility are part of a downsizing of the workforce due to "current market conditions," according to a company statement read by Stephanie Kennedy, human resources director at the company.

Adhesives Research "will be providing severance and other benefits to all affected associates," the company said.

Kennedy would not provide information on when the layoffs will occur, how many employees the company currently has or how many are in the York County location near Glen Rock. According to its website, Adhesives Research has approximately 300 employees around the world, which would mean it is laying off about 12 percent of its workforce.

The company was founded in 1961 and has been in Springfield Township since 1974.

According to its website, Adhesives Research "develops and manufactures high-performance, pressure-sensitive adhesives, tapes, coatings, specialty films and laminates for global customers" in the medical, electronics, industrial/engineered tapes, pharmaceutical and splicing.

In addition to York County, Adhesives Research also has a location in Ireland and sales offices in China, Canada, England and Singapore, according to its website. It also has sales representation in Japan, Taiwan and Korea.

This is a direct indication of poor leadership at the top. For a company who has no strategic plan in place, cannot react to market conditions appropriately, therefore resorts in layoffs. I hope the executives are taking salary cuts for failing to lead the comny by being incompetent in allowing market conditions to impact the company, versus showing real leadership by looking for new markets. When you know in advance you are losing your top customer leadership needs to react with a greater sense of urgency to replace that business and save those 36 jobs.

I find it hard to believe that this story got so much press. Corporations have a process of breathing through the seasons, dealing with changing economies and with the trends on customer orders which often come in spurts. I just don't find that a company of this size laying off 12% of their workforce to be alarming.
The press is almost treating the news like it is a black eye for the company when in fact it is probably a sign that the company is going to be stronger in the long run because they keep their labor as a percentage of sales in line to make them competitive.
Good job, Adhesives Research! I hope they give you as much press next time you have a hiring spurt!
