York Revolution buys York sports radio station

By ,

The York Revolution -- the Atlantic League professional, independent baseball team -- announced Friday the organization has agreed to purchase sports-talk radio station WOYK AM 1350.

Officials from York Professional Baseball Club LLC, owner and operator of the Revolution, said they expect the purchase of the city’s oldest radio station to be completed by April 1, in time for the team’s opening day April 23.

WOYK carries all 140 Revolution games as well as York College sports and York County high school sports. It also broadcasts NBC Sports Network’s nationally syndicated sports talk programming.

Darrell Henry, the Revolution’s play-by-play broadcaster, will become the station’s general manager when the acquisition is complete, and he will continue to call Revolution games.

“The Revolution brings many resources and possibilities to WOYK and its listeners,” the current president of the station, Doug George, said in a news release. “Given the community focus of the radio station throughout the 26 years of my involvement, I find it both exciting and gratifying that the ownership of the station will remain local and continue the tradition of positive participation in our community.”

WOYK has been broadcasting Revolution games for the last four seasons, according to Eric Menzer, president of the team.

“The Revolution is the premier sports team in York, and WOYK is the premier broadcast resource for local sports,” he said in the release. “We want to build on that. We intend to use our resources to build WOYK and enhance the commitment to, and coverage of, local sports while using national resources to continue to broadcast events such as the NFL playoffs and other premier national events.”

Menzer said there will be some new programming with the ownership change, and it will be announced in early April. The station does not have a website or social media presence, but Menzer said that will change. It also will get a new logo.
