PPL moves annual meeting to England

Allentown-based PPL Corp. will hold its annual shareholders meeting this year across the pond in England, the utility company announced at the end of last year.

The shareholders meeting will be held near Birmingham, England, on May 21. It is the first time PPL will move the meeting outside Pennsylvania, said spokesman George Lewis.

The U.K. is PPL's largest business segment.

"That's really what's driving it," Lewis said of the decision.

The company's U.K. subsidiary, Western Power Distribution, has 7.8 million customers. The company added 5.5 million of those customers with a 2011 acquisition, he said.

"Within the last two years, the business in the U.K. has grown significantly," Lewis said. "Having our shareholder meeting is a recognition we have a much expanded presence in the U.K."

By comparison, PPL Electric Utilities serves about 1.4 million customers in Pennsylvania. PPL also provides electricity to about 1 million customers in Kentucky.

Over the last 20 years, PPL has held the shareholder meetings in Allentown. It used to circulate meetings among major population centers in its service area, Lewis said. That included Harrisburg, Lancaster, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton.

PPL is one of the largest companies in the U.S. utility sector with more than $12 billion in 2012 revenue. The company trades its shares on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol PPL.
