Capital City Airport and York Railway Co. in York County, as well as Strasburg Rail Road Co. in Lancaster County, each received grants from the state Department of Transportation today for facility and operation improvements.

PennDOT gave Strasburg Rail Road a $1.1 million grant to make track and grade-crossing improvements that will help the railroad expand its capacity at the East Strasburg rail yard.

In May, Strasburg Rail Road, a working shortline that facilitates movement of freight from rail to trucks, said it expected 27 percent growth in its freight service carloads by 2014 as its business continues to grow.

York Railway is receiving $168,000 to upgrade 4.5 miles of track and a rail crossing for the company’s west branch. The 42-mile freight shortline is owned by Connecticut-based Genesee & Wyoming Inc.

Capital City Airport received $700,000 to improve terminal facilities and rehabilitate a hangar. The airport in Fairview Township is owned and operated by the Susquehanna Area Regional Airport Authority, which operates Harrisburg International Airport.

The state awarded more than $26 million to railroads and airports around the state for capital projects to expand operations and improve safety.

“These projects will supplement the state’s new comprehensive transportation plan, which next year increases dedicated funding for aviation, rail freight and more,” Gov. Tom Corbett said in a new release Thursday.
