In brief: Whitaker Center gets $1M matching grant for new endowment

By ,

An anonymous donor has given Harrisburg-based nonprofit Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts a $1 million challenge grant to create a new endowment to advance access to the performing arts for area students.

The center said a $2 million endowment would generate approximately $100,000 annually. Overall, the center has been consistently running annual operating revenue shortfalls of $750,000 to $1.5 million.

Gary St. Hilaire, Whitaker Center board chairman, said the organization is more than halfway to the goal for this endowment, with more than $500,000 pledged so far.
