All nongeneral acute care health facilities in Pennsylvania providing rehabilitation, psychiatric, long-term acute care and specialty services had positive operating margins during 2012, the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council reported today.

The report’s narrative underscored the role that Medicare and Medicaid play in the hospitals, tracing historical rises and falls in revenue as they were largely occasioned by reimbursement and regulatory changes in those programs.

Statewide, the four types of non-GAC hospitals treated 5.5 percent of the patients receiving inpatient care during FY12 and logged 5.3 percent of the outpatient visits, PHC4 said.
