Department-store chain The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. said this morning it reduced its third-quarter loss compared with the year-ago period.
The company, with corporate offices in York County and Milwaukee, reported a net loss of about $931,000, or 5 cents per diluted share, compared with more than $10.1 million, or 55 cents per diluted share, in the year-ago period.
However, the firm also said comparable-store sales decreased in the quarter by 2.8 percent and total sales were down 2.6 percent to about $651.2 million.
The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. operates 273 department stores, including 10 furniture galleries, in 25 states under the Bon-Ton and other nameplates. Shares are traded on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol BONT.
Also, the Montgomery County-based parent firm of Berks County-based UGI Utilities Inc. this week reported a smaller net loss in its fiscal fourth quarter and a large increase in earnings for the fiscal year.
UGI Corp. said the quarterly loss attributable to the corporation was about $13.4 million, or 12 cents per diluted share, compared with about $14.7 million, or 13 cents per diluted share, in the year-ago period.
For the fiscal year, UGI reported net income of about $275.8 million, or $2.39 per diluted share, compared with about $199.4 million, or $1.76 per diluted share, in the year-ago period.
