Lancaster County-based Darrenkamp's will become the new grocery anchor in about 40,000 square feet of space at the Newberry Commons shopping center just off Interstate 83 in Newberry Township, Rock Commercial Real Estate said today.
The York County store is coming in spring 2014, York-based Rock said.
Within a 3-mile range, the average household income is more than $74,000, and a market study found demand for a full-service grocery store in the area, said Ben Chiaro, brokerage adviser with Rock.
“We were really targeting the full-service models, not just trying to find any grocer or discounter to backfill the space,” he said.
A Super Fresh closed at the location in early 2010, Chiaro said.
The Darrenkamp’s will have a facade improvement, as will the rest of the retail spaces at Newberry Commons, he said.
Darrenkamp’s has locations in the Lancaster, Elizabethtown and Mount Joy areas of Lancaster County.
In another part of the county, discount grocery store chain Aldi has signed a lease for nearly 22,000 square feet of retail space at 905 Loucks Road in York, according to broker Bennett Williams Realty Inc.
Aldi has operated a York-area store on Northern Way in Springettsbury Township and also has locations elsewhere in the midstate.
The chain, which lists more than 1,200 locations in 32 states, offers its own branded products and occasionally national brands.
The business leased the Loucks Road space from York Holding Co. LP, according to York-based Bennett Williams.
