Hooray for a new plan for the Capitol View Commerce Center

By

I drive by that monstrosity almost every day of the week.

More often than not (at least it seems that way), I hit the light at Cameron and Herr streets when it's red. And so I sit ... and stare. And ponder.

How did the construction of the Capitol View Commerce Center go so wrong? What was David Dodd thinking? How long will it sit there, its skeleton exposed to the elements, losing value and the number of salvageable materials by the day?

My husband is a carpenter, so I've spent countless hours envisioning how he would assess the state of the rusting steel beams, the glass windows that retain their stickers, the open stairwell that looks treacherous when it's covered in ice. Can they be saved? Should the whole hulking thing just be bulldozed?

And then, yesterday, after a yearslong process that involved both the criminal and bankruptcy segments of the U.S. Middle District of Pennsylvania, a ray of light shone down upon the monstrosity: John Moran Jr., president of Watsontown-based Moran Industries, walked into a bankruptcy court hearing with a plan and a serious offer.

Despite all the media attention Capitol View has gotten, our Jason Scott was the sole reporter present when the deal was calmly struck and approved. It was a rather anticlimactic ending to a drama-filled saga of fraud and deceit.

And now, it's time to welcome Mr. Moran into the Harrisburg business community. Thank you for wanting to become a part of this vibrant, active group of leaders. I'm now looking forward to being stuck in traffic so I can watch the transformation you have planned unfold.
