WellSpan York Hospital announced today that it will begin construction on a new emergency department in summer 2014 and expects it to open to patients by fall 2017.
The facility, to be in the area of the hospital's current emergency department, will be about 46,000 square feet and is expected to cost $50 million, with a goal of providing a private, patient-centered care experience, according to a news release.
WellSpan said the current emergency department will continue to care for patients seven days a week, 24 hours a day, during renovation and construction.
According to the hospital, the current emergency department was designed to handle about 50,000 patients but currently has nearly 78,000. It has been 20 years since it was renovated, and the hospital said that as the community continues to grow and age, the number of individuals needing emergency services is going to increase.
