Lancaster County-based ERC acquires two Md. companies

By

Lancaster County-based Environmental Recovery Corp., one of the largest residual waste-processing facilities in the Mid-Atlantic region, has announced two recent acquisitions.

The acquired companies, both based in Rosedale, Md., are Gutter King, a refuse container and disposal company with 20 trucks and 500 containers, and AAA Handy Johns, a portable-toilet company with 500 portables. They increase ERC's market share in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., area by more than 10 percent, according to a news release.

"This new growth will enhance our profitability, but more importantly, allows ERC to expand into the residential market, which was a direct objective of the company's strategic plan to increase our market share," said Ken Lefever, president of ERC.

ERC also announced that in an effort to venture into new markets and provide a greater service offering for Baltimore and Washington-area clients, it has secured a facility in Baltimore. The facility includes 1,500 square feet of office space for 10 new employees, a 2,500-square-foot warehouse, and a 1.5-acre lot for equipment storage.

Minor renovations are planned for the property, ERC said, noting that the company will continue to be headquartered in Lancaster.

ERC, a private, family-owned business since 1988, collects and processes and recycles non-hazardous waste materials and liquids, offering environmental, industrial and residual waste services. According to the company, marine and government industries are substantial growth areas, as it offers barge, tank and tugboat cleaning services, bilge-water disposal, and fieldwork.

The cost of the acquisitions and new facility was not disclosed.
