Zach A. Kauffman, 34 Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Engineering Process Lead, Assembly Operations
Zach A. Kauffman started at Harley-Davidson Motor Company as an entry-level engineer and has grown to become the engineering process lead in assembly operations, overseeing 60 percent of the revenue of the $5 billion company. Kauffman also led the efforts to create and validate an assembly process that maximized safety, quality, cost and delivery metrics, yielding an annual savings of well over $100 million per year. He has been a key player in the organization's recent cultural changes and efforts to "standardize work" now used across the entire corporation and at all manufacturing sites. Kauffman's efforts to standardize work and culture have contributed to a unique vision of the future, implementation of that vision and replication throughout the company. Kauffman's success comes largely from his own professional mantras, "create and maintain a career development plan to help achieve your goals as well as being a great tool to communicate to your supervisors and mentors where you want to go," he said, sharing advice from his professional career experiences.
