Courtyard by Marriott will be the brand to operate a new hotel in Shippensburg that's a partnership between the Shippensburg University Foundation and State College-based hospitality company Shaner Hotel Holdings, it said today.
Marriott International Inc. recently awarded the franchise rights for the hotel announced in July to Raider Capital Ventures, the partnership between the foundation and Shaner Hotels, according to the company.
“We look forward to the hotel assisting in growing tourism to Shippensburg and to help to establish the Conference Center at Shippensburg University as one of the premier meeting facilities in Central Pennsylvania,” Plato Ghino, president of Shaner Hotels, said in a statement.
The four-story, 110-room hotel at the north end of Shippensburg University is planned to open in late 2014 or early 2015, according to the company.
The Cumberland Area Economic Development Corp. has been in discussion with the foundation for years about bringing a hotel to that location, but the current idea was fast-tracked when Volvo Construction Equipment expanded its factory nearby in Franklin County, said Jonathan Bowser, CAEDC’s CEO.
There’s a growing demand for hotel rooms, restaurants and other hospitality business in and around Shippensburg because of the university’s assets and the growing business community, he said. The new hotel will do well when it’s complete and only build that climate, he said.
Shaner Hotels owns and manages 40 hotels. Twenty-eight of those locations are Marriott franchises, including one in the Mechanicsburg area.
