The state Department of Labor and Industry said today it will soon begin enforcing a requirement for people filing new unemployment applications to register on the JobGateway website within 30 days of filing or risk not receiving benefits until they do.
The Independent Regulatory Review Commission has approved the regulation, according to a news release. The department has communicated the change to claimants by mailings and website information, the release stated.
A 2011 law calls for registration, but the regulation enabling enforcement was not approved until recently, said Theresa Elliott, a spokeswoman for the department. It will begin enforcing the requirement Sept. 23, she said.
JobGateway averages more than 200,000 job posts for Pennsylvania from nearly 1,000 job boards, according to the release.
"Unemployment compensation benefits were designed to be a temporary lifeline to help transition people from unemployment back to employment," department Secretary Julia Hearthway said in a statement.
The website helps people receiving unemployment benefits to fulfill their work search obligations, Hearthway stated.
The state's unemployment rate has been holding steady at 7.5 percent, according to agency jobless figures for recent months through July.
Requirements under the new regulation apply only to new applications filed on or since Aug. 19, according to the release.
