Work has begun on the first phase of a $180 million initiative that will eventually replace every existing residence hall on the Millersville University campus.

An official groundbreaking ceremony, which will include a beam signing, is set for 4 p.m. Sept. 11. The first phase, with 709 beds in two buildings, is scheduled to be complete in time to accommodate students for the fall 2014 semester.

The project is being financed through tax exempt bonds issued by Student Services Inc. Ambling University Development Group LLC is managing the project and the development team, which includes Benchmark Construction and Lord, Aeck and Sargent Architects.

Project progress is to be posted at www.newvillehousing.com.
