Three months after he was nominated to the post, former Cumberland Valley Superintendent William Harner is out as acting Secretary of Education, according to a news release from Gov. Tom Corbett's office.

Corbett requested the resignation.

Harner, 56, assumed the post June 1. He previously served five years as superintendent for Cumberland Valley School District.

Carolyn Dumaresq of Harrisburg, the department's executive deputy secretary, will serve as acting secretary, effective immediately.

Corbett spokeswoman Lynn Lawson labeled the decision a personnel matter and said it was “not a difference of opinion on educational policy.”

Lawson said the administration knew of his service at Cumberland Valley, but that she was not in a position to talk about what was in his file there.

The confirmation process had not started. More detailed background checks are a function of the acting title, she said.
