The Shippensburg University Foundation has entered into an agreement with State College-based hotel management company Shaner Group to construct and operate a hotel next to the Conference Center at Shippensburg University in Cumberland County.
“We are confident that partnering to build a high-quality brand hotel adjacent to the Conference Center at Shippensburg University will benefit the University, local and regional industry, and the community,” Joel R. Zullinger, chairman of the Shippensburg University Foundation board, said in a statement.
The Shaner Group is a management company and franchisee of Marriott International Inc., Hilton Hotels Corporation, InterContinental Hotels Group and Choice Hotels.
Details of the hotel project still need to be worked out, but the goal is to break ground before the end of the year, said Anne Detter, the foundation’s marketing director.
The foundation said the agreement is a response to industry and economic development groups interested in a hotel near the conference center at 500 Newburg Road in Shippensburg Township.
There has been more interest in economic development in the Shippensburg areas of Cumberland and Franklin counties over the past couple of years as Volvo Construction Equipment continues its facility expansion. And it turns out, this latest hotel project will be important to Volvo, too.
“We use the conference center regularly for training and meetings, and a neighboring hotel offers a great opportunity to host customers, dealers and visitors for multiday meetings and conferences,” Sean Glennon, Volvo’s vice president of operations, said in the foundation’s statement.
The foundation is a nonprofit independent from the university but secures funding to benefit students and programs of the university. The foundation said it plans to form a for-profit company to own and operate the hotel.
