The state Senate on Tuesday confirmed Beverly D. Mackereth, a former member of the state House of Representatives from York County, as secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare.

Gov. Tom Corbett nominated Mackereth this spring after she became acting secretary of the department in February following the departure of Gary Alexander.

Mackereth joined the department in 2011, when she was appointed deputy secretary of the Office of Children, Youth and Families, according to a statement about her nomination.

She previously served in the House and as mayor of Spring Grove in York County and was executive director of the York County Human Services Department.
