Pa. tops medical imaging manufacturing employment list

Pennsylvania has more workers directly employed by the medical imaging manufacturing industry than any other state, according to a new study conducted by Charles River Associates for the Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance.

The study says 62,000 Americans are directly employed in the industry, of which 7,050 are in Pennsylvania. The second and third states on the list are Wisconsin and California; the report notes that states at the top of the list generally have large manufacturing facilities and company headquarters.

Average employee compensation nationwide including benefits and employer’s contribution to payroll taxes was $95,000.

“When adjusted to only include salary, the average medical imaging industry worker earned about 80 percent more than the national per worker income of $45,320,” the study says.

MITA characterized the study’s results as an argument against the 2.3 percent medical device excise tax contained in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

“This study reaffirms that the medical imaging technology industry is critical to the health of both the people of Pennsylvania and the local economy,” said Gail Rodriguez, executive director of MITA. “As policymakers in Pennsylvania seek to promote economic growth, it is critical that they consider the degree to which the medical device excise tax directly impacts the vitality of locally-based medical imaging manufacturers, which are critical to creating and supporting local jobs.”
