Adams County-based Zeigler Brothers Inc., a manufacturer of animal feeds for aquaculture, biomedical industries, pets and zoos, has been named national “Exporter of the Year” by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
“Small business exporters like (Zeigler) are key engines of our economy and are playing a crucial role in job creation as we move toward an economy that is built to last,” SBA Deputy Administrator Marie Johns said in a statement.
Zeigler’s executives were presented the award at the World Trade Day Conference in Denver yesterday.
The SBA recently announced that Zeigler also would be recognized as the Philadelphia District and Region 3 Exporter of the Year. The Gardners-based company sells more than 300 types of bulk and specialty animal feeds in about 40 countries.
Exports account for 14 percent of national gross domestic product at a high $2.2 trillion in 2012, according to SBA.
National and state agencies have been encouraging more companies to export their products -- and assisting them in it -- as a way to grow their business and expand the economy.
