SBA to honor two midstate companies in June

The U.S. Small Business Administration will honor two Central Pennsylvania companies, including Adams County-based animal food company Zeigler Brothers Inc., next month in its annual Small Business Week awards.

Gardners-based Zeigler Brothers is being recognized by the SBA’s Philadelphia District and Region 3 as Small Business Exporter of the Year for selling its more than 300 specialty animal feeds in 40 countries, according to the SBA.

Zeigler Brothers was started in 1935 and today makes animal feeds for zoos, fish farms and laboratory animals, among other niche industries. It has manufacturing in Gardners and East Berlin. In 2011, the company worked with Elizabethtown College business students on market research aimed at further expanding its export business.

The events in Philadelphia next month will also honor Ivelisse Alemany, CEO of Carlisle-based Markant Corp., as the Minority Small Business Person of the Year. SBA administrators visited Markant in November to present Alemany with recognition. Markant is an information technology consulting and staffing firm that works with the U.S. government.
