Pennsylvania's First Lady, Susan Corbett, will speak Tuesday at the groundbreaking for the Susquehanna Art Museum, according to announcements from the museum and Corbett's office.
The 4:30 p.m. ceremony and a related block party are to celebrate the beginning of work on the museum's 20,000-square-foot new home at Third and Calder streets in Harrisburg's Midtown neighborhood. As part of the $7 million project, the former Keystone Trust building at the site is being restored to serve as the museum's entrance lobby. The museum also is raising funds for a $5 million endowment.
Corbett, who is the chairwoman of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, is slated to speak at 5 p.m. Also scheduled to speak are Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson, state Rep. Patty Kim and officials from the museum, the arts council and the Cultural Enrichment Fund.
Museum officials have said they are aiming for an October 2014 opening for the new site.
