Gov. Tom Corbett has nominated Bev Mackereth, a former state House member from York County, to become the next secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare.

Mackereth has been the acting secretary since February, taking over for Gary Alexander.

She joined the department in 2011, when she was appointed deputy secretary of the Office of Children, Youth and Families, the release stated.

Her previous experience includes executive director of the York County Human Services Department, state representative serving a portion of York County and mayor of Spring Grove, according to the release.

The position requires Pennsylvania Senate confirmation.
