SARAA challenges Capital City Airport tower closure

The Susquehanna Area Regional Airport Authority is challenging the decision by the Federal Aviation Administration to close the tower at Capital City Airport in York County as part of sequestration cuts.

"While we understand and support the fact that the federal government needs to reduce spending and become more efficient, the arbitrary decisions made by the Federal Aviation Administration regarding this issue are difficult to understand," Tim Edwards, SARAA executive director, said in a statement.

The SARAA board hired Massachusetts-based Anderson & Kreiger to represent it in its Petition for Review with the FAA over the tower closure.

Cargo tonnage at Harrisburg International Airport, the amount of stuff that UPS, FedEx, and commercial carriers fly in and out, was 8.4 percent less than the same month a year ago, the airport said this week.

In March, HIA handled 4,168 tons of cargo, down from 4,551 a year ago, according to the airport's monthly statistics. While the cargo was down last month, first quarter cargo tonnage was down by just 0.3 percent from a year ago.

Passengers arriving at and leaving HIA totaled 107,739 in March, or 5.6 percent fewer than a year ago. US Airways saw the largest monthly drop in its passengers at 10.2 percent fewer.

In the first quarter, total passengers dropped 5. 1 percent to 292,319. Delta Air Lines saw the largest quarterly drop from a year ago at 8.3 percent fewer passengers.
