A third student housing facility for Harrisburg University of Science and Technology is slated for a fall opening, said Eric Darr, the university's interim president.
Work has begun to convert 319 Market St. into a 54-bed apartment complex that will include loft-style units.
Brickbox previously purchased buildings at 301 and 335 Market St. Those properties currently have about 160 beds between them, Darr said.
A Subway restaurant was recently added to the Market View Place building at 301 Market St. The second and third floors, which were vacant, will get 20 new student beds for the fall.
"We'll have close to 240 (beds) total come this fall," Darr said.
HU has about 380 degree-seeking students this year, including 80 graduate students. Freshman students are required to live in student housing, Darr said.
First-year enrollment is projected to be about 160 in the fall, he said, which would be up from 138 last fall.
"There are certainly plans for a fourth (building). There are certainly enough properties available around the university," Darr said, adding that the goal is more mixed-use properties with first-floor retail.
Since HU does not offer a meal plan, each student is projected to spend about $3,500 per year on food, spokesman Steven Infanti said.
"This new building alone is expected to create a direct economic impact of $189,000 a year in the downtown business district," he said. "That brings the total of the direct economic impact on the downtown to more than $830,000 a year" from the three apartment buildings.
“We are looking at other student housing opportunities both near the HU campus as well as other locations,” said Dan Deitchman, owner of Brickbox.
