Highmark Inc. and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine have entered a five-year, $500,000 partnership intended to increase the supply and retention of physicians in rural areas of Pennsylvania.

The program will award five $20,000 scholarships annually to LECOM students, with recipients required to practice medicine at a Highmark-approved site in a designated area of need for each year they received scholarship funding.

According to a news release, Pennsylvania has the third-largest rural population in the nation and many physicians currently practicing in rural communities here are planning to retire in the next few years.
