Five or six firms already have shown interest in the request for proposals advertised by Harrisburg for its sanitation contract, said Fred Reddig, executive director of the Governor's Center for Local Government Services at the state Department of Community and Economic Development.

Reddig, who was providing an update at today's city recovery advisory committee meeting, said a pre-proposal conference with interested parties is scheduled for Thursday.

Privatizing sanitation services is part of the city's court-approved recovery plan.

Bids are due to the city by June 14, according to the RFP that went out last month.

The city hopes to have a contract in place by July with commencement of the work slated for Jan. 1, 2014, Reddig said.
