Dogged by this past recession, residential building permits in Central Pennsylvania have averaged about $607.7 million in annual value — less than half of the aggregate annual value in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey, 2005 was the peak year for building permit value in the midstate at more than $1.3 billion. Going back to 1995, the oldest data available, the low was last year with $405.6 million.

Through the first two months of 2013, residential building permits are ahead of last year's pace — 375 to 332, with valuations of $65.7 million this year and $50.3 million through February 2012.
