Comcast Corp., the Philadelphia-based media and technology giant that owns NBCUniversal, recently announced the two companies will double the number of veterans they hire before 2015.
The companies met their three-year goal of hiring 1,000 veterans two years ahead of schedule and will commit to hiring 1,000 more veterans, Comcast said in a statement. The company has a significant presence in the midstate.
Comcast's efforts are part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's "Hiring Our Heroes" campaign started in 2011 that aims to hire 500,000 veterans and military spouses by 2014. Businesses have pledged to hire more than 210,000 veterans and spouses and have confirmed 93,000 hires, according to the groups.
Kevin Schmiegel, the Hiring Our Heroes executive director, told the Business Journal in December that, although commitments from large companies are important, reaching lofty goals in veteran employment will require commitments from small companies, which comprise the largest block of employment in the U.S.
