Proposal would change Department of Public Welfare's name

By - Last modified: March 4, 2013 at 9:53 AM

Two state senators from opposite sides of the aisle, including the Democratic leader, have said they are introducing legislation to change the name of the state Department of Public Welfare to the state Department of Human Services.

The logic from state Sen. Bob Mensch, R-Bucks, Lehigh, Montgomery and Northampton counties, and Senate Democratic Leader Jay Costa, D-Allegheny County, is that 93 percent of the department's activities involve health and human services, according to a co-sponsorship memorandum.

The memorandum calls the welfare name a "misnomer."

If passed and enacted, signs, supplies and other materials with the old name would be used up to save money, according to the memorandum.
