Central Pa. podiatrist gets federal prison term for $118K fraud

By - Last modified: March 4, 2013 at 10:15 AM

A podiatrist who had offices in Harrisburg and Elizabethtown has been sentenced to 16 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to fraud.

Prosecutors said Dr. Michael C. Karason, 44, also had two offices in California and billed health insurers for services that were supposedly provided at the same time in Pennsylvania and California. Some of those services were not provided at all, prosecutors said; others were provided by an unlicensed office manager not authorized to perform them.

Karason, who now lives in California, was also ordered to pay $118,072.29 in restitution to Medicare, Capital BlueCross and Highmark and to serve a three-year term of supervised release after his prison sentence.

The case was investigated by the Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
