By - Last modified: February 8, 2013 at 10:19 AM

U.S. Sen. Bob Casey has introduced legislation to establish Lancaster and York counties as the Susquehanna Gateway National Heritage Area, according to a news release.

The designation would add the area to 49 others in the country that have helped to foster public- and private-sector partnerships for preservation, education and recreational initiatives, the release stated.

Establishing the heritage areas has helped to protect natural and cultural resources while promoting local economic development, according to the release.
