Honors, designations and recognitions

Susquehanna Township-based Pennsylvania Newspaper Association gave its 2012 Benjamin Franklin Awards for Excellence to William C. Anderson, publisher of Cambria County-based Mainline Newspapers, and Sara Ganim and staff members of The Patriot-News in Hampden Township. Anderson's colleagues describe him as the quintessential newspaperman. He began his career as sports editor of The Punxsutawney Spirit and worked successfully for multiple corporate owners. In 2000, he built a group of Mountaintop weeklies into a respected and profitable group. Partnering with George “Scoop” Sample III, owner and president of Sample News Group, his group grew with a daily in Latrobe and two weeklies in Shippensburg. He also has been a leader in his community and played an instrumental role in making Groundhog Day a national event. For two years, Ganim, a Patriot-News police reporter, tracked rumors that former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky was being investigated for child abuse. The first story was published on March 31, 2011, with a large front-page headline, but little public reaction. While initially the media focus was on Penn State and Sandusky, Ganim was determined to focus on the victims. The coverage eventually led to a Pulitzer Prize for local reporting for Ganim and the newspaper staff, and spurred positive changes within the community and beyond, including calls for federal hearings on child abuse reporting laws. Sandra C. Hardy of Bucks County-based Calkins Media received the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her outstanding dedication to PNA and the newspaper industry. She is a director, corporate vice president and co-owner of Calkins, which her family started in 1937. The company publishes newspapers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Florida, and also owns television stations in Alabama and Florida.
