Wine Country adds new members; trail up to 15 wineries

Hershey Harrisburg Wine Country, a wine trail program started last year, has added three new members, expanding its reach to 15 wineries, President Jason Reimer said.

Reimer is one of the owners at The Vineyard at Hershey in Londonderry Township, which also opened last year.

The new members are Mount Hope Estate and Winery in Rapho Township, Moon Dancer Vineyards and Winery in Lower Windsor Township, and The Vineyard at Grandview in Mount Joy Township.

“Throughout the first seven months since launch, the wine country has fielded more than 50 calls or emails per month with visitors looking to come out of town and get package deals,” Reimer said.

Of the program’s 2012 event ticket sales, 21 percent were from outside a 60-mile radius, he said.

Hershey Harrisburg Wine Country was started as a way to promote local agriculture and to boost tourism efforts.

Unlike other wine trails across the state and the region that are more event-focused, wine country has taken more of a destination approach.

However, it does have its signature events. Its newest one — ValenWines Day — is a two-day wine and chocolate experience that will run Feb. 9 and 10.
