The longtime managing and marketing director at Totem Pole Playhouse in Fayetteville announced her retirement this week.

Sue McMurtray, who turns 65 on Jan. 1, is leaving show business after nearly three decades.

"I've experienced 168 shows in 28 years, traveling to many different locales with each show — places I may never get to see in real life. What a joy!" she said in a statement.

Before Totem Pole, McMurtray attended nursing school, became an X-ray technician and eventually ran the historic Penn National Inn, located near the summer theater between Gettysburg and Chambersburg.

As managing director, she was responsible for contracts, making travel and lodging accommodations and planning and executing advertising and publicity campaigns for theater productions. She also was known to pitch in and help with costuming as well as other production and daily organizational tasks.

Totem Pole opens its 63rd season in May. Earlier this year, the playhouse launched a fundraising campaign to ensure its doors stayed open.
