Manheim icon Shaw's Market to close

The Manheim Downtown Development Group is holding an event at noon Friday to bid farewell to Shaw's Market, the borough's sole grocery.

Owner Al Shaw, 74, said he is closing the business at 101 N. Main St. for health reasons. He is scheduled for an operation that will require “a couple months” of convalescence, he said.

Shaw said Monday is his last day at the store. It will stay open for several weeks in January to reduce inventory, then will close. Future plans are uncertain, though Shaw said he is considering selling antiques there.

“I have quite a bit of stuff in my warehouse,” he said.

The historic building, once home to the Prussian House Tavern, became a grocery in 1933, according to the development group. Shaw bought the building in 1961 and has operated the grocery since then.
